Irrigation channel metering

Flow monitoring of pumped water to provide water for the fruit agriculture in the Dutch Betuwe area.

In the village of Doornenburg in Holland, two massive waterpumps have been installed (capacity of 2m³/s water each) on a floating pontoon to pump water from the Rijn into a small river.

This river water is used to irrigate the fruit plantations in the Betuwe region. The non-contact radar flow meter measures the water level in the river and the water velocity at the same moment. Data is used to control water volume relaesed by the two pumps.

This way the level in the river may be kept equal all the time, even when dry weather demands for a lot more of irrigation water. This project has been worked out in cooperation with Modderkolk BV.
