Installation & commissioning of a TORPEE-MAG on the inlet of a water treatment plant
CUSTOMER
- SWDE (Société Wallonne des Eaux) is our customer and the main water utility in the Walloon Region of Belgium, serving approximately 2.5 million people through a drinking water distribution network of around 37,000 km of pipes.
- The application concerns two DN900 pipes carrying raw water down from the Eupen dam. The water first passes through a turbine to generate electricity, before being treated and distributed to the region as drinking water.
TASK DEFINITION
- The two DN900 pipes were fitted with old electromagnetic flowmeters that had reached the end of their working life and needed to be replaced.
- Access to the metering location was difficult, which made replacing the existing full-bore magmeters a complex and costly undertaking.
- SWDE needed a metering solution that could be installed without cutting the pipes, interrupting the water supply, or requiring major civil works, given the constrained access.
- Accurate flow measurement is essential, since this water is used both to generate electricity and, downstream, to produce drinking water for the region.
- The metering solution needed to be integrated into SWDE's monitoring system.
SOLUTION
- Installation of two DN900 TORPEE-MAG insertion electromagnetic flowmeters, replacing the old magmeters without cutting the pipes or shutting down the flow.
- As a hot-tap insertion sensor, the TORPEE-MAG could be installed through a valve, avoiding the complex, costly civil works that the difficult access would otherwise have required.
- Each TORPEE-MAG is connected to a stationary converter, the TMC-20, displaying all information on an LCD screen and transmitting the data via Modbus to the SCADA system of the customer.
- No calibration on site necessary.
