Portable Dual Axis Current Meter

The Model 511 Current Meter is designed for general purpose applications in lakes, oceans, estuaries, surface ans underground rivers, as well as offshore drilling rigs. The 40 mm dual-axis sensor is furnished with 6 m of cable as standard, additional cable up to 300 m is available.
The Model 523 has a miniaturized sensor for laboratory applications such as model tanks, where flow is confined in small areas. The 12 mm dual-axis sensor is furnished with 6 m of cable as standard, additional sensor cable up to 24 m is available.
Both systems are battery and AC powered. The units are supplied with analog X and Y displays, selectable time constant and 0 to +/- 1 VDC outputs.

Principle of operation

The electromagnetic sensor consists of a system which contains an electromagnet and two pairs of external electrodes in contact with the water. Flow around the sensor intersects magnetic flux lines, generating voltages which are sensed by the electrodes.
These voltages are processed by the analog signal conditioner and presented as voltages linearly proporional to X and Y velocity vectors. The velocity magnitude V = (X2+Y2)1/2.
The sensors for all models are specially shaped and have no moving parts, so they are not suceptible to clogging or fouling.
To properly measure horizontal water velocity in the presence of vertical motion, the current meter must process a cosinusoidal tilt response. This is achieved with the MMI's patented shape.

Self contained Dual Axis Current Meter

The Model 551 is a self contained current meter capable of withstanding depths to 1000 meter, making it ideal for harsch offshore applications.
DC powered electronics are enclosed in a cylindrical underwater housing with bulkhead connector X and Y analog output voltage are proportional to water velocity.
The legendary 100 mm dual axis from MMI has been used in thousands of offshore applications such as drilling rigs, submarines and oceanographical research.
This sensor can also be used on special portable battery operated systems (Model 527) or permanent AC powered systems (Model 524).
